Is there nothing to be done about theocracies that brutalize their women? That is not a rhetorical question, I really wonder about the implications of doing nothing and also about the implications of interfering.

I agree. I mean, when people think of Africa and the associated political, ethical, and social challenges, what comes to mind? Rwanda and Darfur. It's the elephant in the room that nobody seems to want to address (aside from the occassional "Oh, how horrible" right before changing the TV channel).
